WEB SITE STATISTICS : DESCRIBING VISITORS

Who is Accessing my site?

Web servers record domains and IP addresses, not individuals names or e-mail addresses. There is valuable information that can be derived from the domains associated with where your traffic is coming from. If you look at the top sites accessed by section it will show you the top ten examples of these domains. You may be able to recognize sites by provider (For example, voyageurweb.com is one of VoyageurWeb's domains, and msus.edu is Minnesota State University).

Another way to discover more about these domains or IP Addresses is to do a search for them at InterNic. InterNic is a global, nonprofit, global authority where domain names are registered. Though increasingly, with better security in place, this doesn't reveal much information.

  • .com is associated with commercial businesses
  • .net is associated with an internet service provider
  • .org is associated with a non-profit organization.
Notice the Robots/Spiders visitors area - this shows you activity by the major search engines. Inktomi (Yahoo), Google, MSN and AskJeeves are common ones to see. Note that their accesses to your site are not counted among your other statistics (daily, monthly, etc).
