WEB SITE STATISTICS : COMPARISONS

Are the number of accesses we are receiving a good amount?

Web site statistics provide you with some information (more than most media) about the attention your information is receiving. It should be treated conservatively, with caution and in conjunction with other information to determine web site "success".

Most sites start with very low numbers of accesses as they are fist announced, then they grow in a graduated way over time. The amount of time that it takes to reach your goal number of accesses depends on several factors: (not in any order)

  1. Simple, easy to spell domain name
  2. Search Engine Listing - appearing under keywords you users would think of
  3. The amount of promotion to your key users (through other media- radio, brochures, business cards, billboards, TV, packages)
  4. Content users want and talk about
  5. Good design & Coding (to avoid frustration)
  6. Luck - As with all products and communications some part of it is what else gets their attention

Some general ideas

  • A small unpromoted website with primarily static information (similar to print brochures) will usually only see a few dozen accesses per week and an audience of 300 or less.
  • A well promoted web site with changing content and interactive elements at least weekly and an audience of around 1,000 can expect 100 or so accesses a week after the site is at least 6 months old.
  • A well promoted large web sites with lots of updated content that is useful and easy to find and an audience of 5000-10,000 can expect 500-1,000 accesses a week after the site is at least 6 months old.
